The Calypso Project Report
The Calypso Project is a music and arts initiative designed to enhance the lives of deaf Barbadians. It raises awareness of the deaf community, fosters connections between deaf and hearing individuals, and provides a voice for this marginalized group.
To evaluate the project's impact, it was crucial to gather insights into the experiences of deaf individuals in Barbados. This research report compiled by Dr. Penny Moore presents findings from interviews with members of the deaf community, educators, government officials, health professionals, advocates, and family members. These interviews highlighted family life, educational and employment experiences, discrimination, Deaf culture, and the resilience of the deaf community.
The report also shows key achievements of The Calypso Project, based on data from workshops, focus groups, audience feedback, and exit interviews conducted at a final concert featuring performances by international deaf and hearing musicians alongside local students.
